Posting your date of birth on the sites like orkut/ facebook.. is so nice, so that our friends can see that and they will wish us on the same day... but have you noticed the importance of the date of birth? It is a very important credential you are publishing on the net to everyone.
You know one thing, in some of the banks, they will use the date of birth, if you dont remember the password. So I think, I dont have to explain more...

I agree with the fact but this is not the only security option that a bank uses. Most of the banks are aware of the security issues ( not 100% anyway ). Date Of Birth is accessible from many sources like Bio-Data, job sites, and other sites as well. So a bank cannot use the DOB as their main security key for changing the password. You see that the public mail services like Google mail,Yahoo mail, Hotmail, etc. are not doing a single trusted source to reset their customer passwords.
So publishing the DOB in any public forum or community sites are not very dangerous.
It is actually happened to me once. I was using the phone banking, and I forgot my PIN number. So when I typed the wrong PIN, the interactive system told me it is a wrong PIN and it asks me to enter the date of birth, when I entered my date of birth, it takes me to my account and given me all the details.
